Dear bass votaries and dance fanatics,

it's time for mambo num... sorry, meet&beat number 5!
After almost one long year we finally huddled together to once more present to you a celebration of genuine sounds and illustrious gathering. radio&fernseh and Pushanski will be playing Dubstep, UK Funky, Garage and beyond on the main floor, joining forces with the good people of Project Squared, namely Gordon, Skratch from Berlin HQ and Asusu from dubstep epicentre Bristol. Visual rear cover by Thomsen. The 2nd floor will be filled with various sounds, or 'Dispodisko' as we like to call it, by Rainerrock and Tres Bjorn. Special appearance by Pushanski. Visuals that will make your eyes twist will be transmitted by buntundinfarbe.

Doors open at 22.00 at VCF. Entrance fee is a paltry 5 €.

All over the city there will be stages with free live shows by DJs and musicians from all over the world. House cleaning does not have to be a motherfucker! It can be a lot of fun in fact. My very first place in Berlin was a nice two room apartment in Prenzlauer Berg I shared with a friend of mine. Although the apartment's seventysomething square meters could have easily been done in about an hour, it usually took us three or more hours to finish cleaning. It's not that we've been super pedantic or anything, but we always used to turn the whole thing into a cleaning ceremony. First of all we took coffee and cigarette breaks at least every thirty minutes (one of the few occasions my flatmate smoked btw) which usually turned into beer and something we call "Sportzigarette" breaks after a while. Secondly we got super hungry from all those hours of cleaning of course so we either went out to go buy us some meal or prepared something ourselves at some point. Apart from the breaks the most important part of our ceremony was to open all the windows and play loads of well selected records. While cleaning we listened to all kind of stuff, usually a lot of classic German Hip Hop. The radio was never an option. One special record I remember was a must during every procedure was The Streets' A Grand Don't Come For Free. Something we definetly would have played if it would have been available at the time are radio&fernseh's dj sets. Today I played his brandnew dj set Ich Will Kein Tier In Marakech Sein while spring cleaning and it proved to be a perfect cleaning soundtrack. Wobbly dubsteb meets spheric and straight-ligned electronica spiced up with some soulful female vocals and topped off with remixes of two of my favorite pop songs, some flying lotus and his mate gonjasufi. It’s happening! meet&beat, Berlin’s most likeable club night, will take place in less than two weeks. Those of you who we already had the pleasure of partying with might notice that we have found a new location right in the heart of Berlin. Beside the very central location between Alexanderplatz and Hackescher Markt and it’s luscious sound system VCF offers double fun with two dancefloors. I don't fancy live albums too much. In fact there are only two of those type of records I managed to listen to more than only once. First one is legendary Social Distortion live at the Roxy from 98' that I unfortunately lost many years ago at times when people would not play music from youtube but actually took (original) CDs to parties that other people would actually be interested in stealing. The second one is a live recording from a Jamie T concert at the Barfly in London, which I actually enjoy even more than the album. Also I sometimes find live videos with versions that I like more than the actual song. Very often over at la blogotheque and sometimes simply on youtube.

I enjoy simple songs like 3 minutes long with one three chord guitar riff in the chorus. That's me. Call me boring, call me mainstream, but this is something I enjoy.
But sometimes also more complex pieces catch my attention. This time it's a remix of UK's The Big Pink by New York's Gang Gang Dance. In seven minutes they even manage to suprise me three times.

Looking for an apartment in Berlin can be a mess. I mean compared to other big cities there still is plenty of cheap space but the real good flats don't appear on websites or in newspapers... People tend to move flats about every 1,5 years, so if someone moves out of a good apartment you will find someone to take over your flat in no time, even if it's someone who didn't even plan to move flats but wants to grasp at an opportunity.
The reason I am telling you this is because a good friend of mine is looking for that wonderful 3+ apartment in Berlin that you or your friends are just about to move out of... in that case E-MAIL HIM .
I suppose he is happy for any other tip, too.

Pushanski, radio&fernseh, RainerRock and Très Bjørn gonna party keenplan style fearing no musical borders and pleasing both music nerds and dance freaks.

The location is only a few steps away from the ( S-Bahn station Prenzlauer Allee or ) tram station Friesickestraße (Tram 12/ M13). The entrance is free and good drinks are served at reasonable prices.

You know you are an artiste extraordinaire when journalists & blogger have to come up with new words to define your sound. Right now I make up "squirky" to describe the sound of Metronomy. From the gazillion remixes being posted on blogs every minute I think I could always identify such a "squirky" Metronomy remix. But this remix of Late Of The Pier's "The Bears Are Coming" I just found on tastes like caramel is different. Rather minimal, very un-metronomy. And I'm lovin it! The quirky sound from the original plus the Prince-like (...acid rain) voice... metronomynal!

This very morning my coffee grounds told me the following:

So I googled it. What I found might be one of the most promising bands of 2009.
Sprengjuhöllin are from Iceland, so far all their songs were in icelandic, but they translated some of them now. I saw an interview at Iceland Airwaves in 2006 where they already seemed to think about changing their name to "hall of explosions", "hall of stars" or >ehem< "starcastle". I hope they won't.

People - including myself sometimes - try too hard to see what happens overseas from time to time and miss keeping an eye on the local music scene. In the case of Berlin it's actually hard to say 'local', because since decades people come from all over the world to live and record music in this truly inspiring city. A recent example is Brandon Bethancourt aka Alaska In Winter from New Mexico who describes the process of producing his newest album Holiday as followed:

After spending half a year in an east Berlin flat, Brandon Bethancourt (AKA Alaska in Winter) awoke one afternoon after a 16 hour-straight dance party from the previous weekend only to discover that there on his computer, was a fully finished, and totally rad new album.
Yes indeed... Brandon has no recollection of how that music got there on his laptop other than vague fragmented late night memories that involve synthesizers, lasers, berliner pils, haus musik, and possibly some singing... but regardless, Brandon pretty much had so much fun, and miraculously, an album came out if it some how... and Brandon's pumped about it... and you should be too!

Yep, that's what it looks like outside these days. It's the time of the year when it does not make a difference if you look up to the sky or down on the sidewalk. The current issue of streetwear today magazine poses the question "must check blog?" robed in the recognisably art of dutch (street) artist Parra and interviews with amongst others the mentioned persona i.e. about his opinion about this phenomona that keeps getting bigger since its early days in the late 90's. My answer is as simple as paradox and admittedly unsatisfying: yes and no.

Believe me I could prattle about this topic for hours, but I highly doubt anyone would read more than the first two lines of what I would write here. I mean, when was the last time you read more than one or two pages online and when was the last time you got bored of a video on youtube, vimeo, etc. after just two seconds? Blogs and the internet - for me - is about getting fast and fresh information. In case I want to get deeper into a topic my sources are still books, newspapers and magazines. In fact I already have a headache reading through what I just wrote.

I recommend you to go and buy sw2d. It is full of different interesting stuff and for only 5 Euro you get that (almost old school) haptic feeling of actual holding a lovely printed magazine in your hands and a short break from this evil mind altering computer you have been sitting in front of far too long already.

In Septembr BPitch colleagues Modeselektor and Allen Allien play some shows together in Europe and the States on their Jetlag Tour. Fortunately they don't let down their hometown and planned a gig at Pannebar the 14th of September.

Besides the fact, that 103 is absolutely not the proper venue for a RATATAT show plus they had to stop the show twice because 1. total sound black out 2. somebody stole a drumstick (last pair)... the concert was awesomazing! I found this nice remix of Mirando by Jona Bechtolt (& Claire L. Evans) aka YACHT, who dropped his first Album with the most encouraging title I Believe In You. Your Magic Is Real. last year.

Some years ago when I was living with a girl from Italy all she and her friends were talking about was Berghain (or "berg'ein"). It became even more popular over the years. Somehow I never managed to go there ("yeah, well next weekend..." u know?). This weekend I was there and... geez, this place really is another level. Modeselektor and some other cats from BPitch were playing. Modeselektor set was the bomb, as usual!

Auch wenn es kaum zu glauben ist, es gab eine Zeit vor Web 2.0. Da haben die Leute 'richtige' Webseiten gehabt und Blogs waren noch feuchte Träume amerikanischer Informatikstudenten. Unser ganzer stolz war damals www.punk-and-skate.de. Aus eben dieser Zeit stammen auch Division Of Laura Lee, damals noch beim schwedischen Punklabel Burning Heart. Aber wie wir scheinen auch Division of Laura Lee dieser Punkphase entwachsen. Mit dem neuen Label I Made This wurde dementsprechend ein neuer Sound gewählt.
Die Single Central Park soll am 1. August erscheinen. Und wie es sich für das neue Image gehört gibt es dazu jetzt schon gelungene Remixe.

RATATAT - Neues Album und !Live!

Wer kennt das nicht?! Manche Momente im Leben fühlen sich so unfassbar großartig an, dass man für die Dauer dieses Augenblicks unaufhörlich blöd grinsen muss... Einer dieser Momente für mich war, als ich RATATAT live in Göteborg sehen durfte. Ich hatte keine Ahnung was mich erwarten würde, aber kurz nach dem ersten Ton war ich konsequent sprachlos. Live erhalten die Songs eine klangliche Breite, wie sie einfach von keinem Tonträger wiedergegeben werden kann. Ein Sound der den kompletten Raum für sich beansprucht, ohne dabei einengend zu sein. Vor allem Mike Stroud der auf der Bühne wirkt wie selbst in Trance gespielt, lässt jeglichen Eindruck von (un)professioneller Routine vermissen und überträgt ein Gefühl in seine Performance wie Jimi Hendrix und Joe Cocker in Woodstock zusammen. Am 08.07.08 erscheint RATATATs neues Album LP3 und - was fast noch wichtiger ist- am 07.08. spielen RATATAT im 103. Einen Tag vorher spielen sie im Übel&Gefärlich in Hamburg, ich denke ich werde versuchen beide Shows zu sehen.

Der offizielle Mix der deutschen Nationalelf zur EM 2008...

... ist es zwar nicht, allerdings entstand dieses neue DJ Set von radio&fernseh spontan in einem Take nach dem erfolgreichen EM-Viertelfinalspiel gegen Portugal inklusive entsprechenden Kaltgetränken und Sportzigarette. Insgesamt schön basslastige Elektronik, gespickt mit ein paar Klassikern, fetten Neuheiten und einigen Überraschungen. radio&fernseh ist mit 3zuwzai wieder ein Mix gelungen, der auf keinem iPod fehlen darf.
Es bleibt zu hoffen, dass es heute Abend wieder einen Grund zum Feiern gibt....

Nach einer intensiven musikalischen Wiederverarbeitung der 80er und 90er sind mit Künstlern wie Hercules and Love Affair oder Calvin Harris in letzter Zeit auch die 70er Jahre mal wieder in die Interessenssphäre einer größeren Musiköffentlichkeit gerückt. Momentan weitläufig einzigartig ist ein Projekt des englischen DJs und Produzenten Henry Smithson aka Riton. Eine Kleine Nacht Musik ist nicht nur im (verfälschten?) Namen an eine Epoche um 1800 angelehnt, auch der Sound enthält unüberhörbare Einflüsse. Einfacher, harter Techno Beat gepaart mit Klavier, Streichern und choralem "ah-ah-ah-ah-ah". Ähnlich auch schon in den 70ern beliebt gewesen. Ein selbstbetiteltes Album soll im Juli bei Modular erscheinen.

Kürzlich lauschte ich auf einer freitagabendlichen Autofahrt nach London der Annie Mac Show auf BBC Radio 1. Die heisere Engländerin spielt neben jeder Menge fetter Sounds regelmäßig einen fünf Minuten langen Minimix, den Künstler aus aller Welt exklusiv für die Show zusammenstellen. Diesmal von den Niederländern Kraak & Smaak. Bei einer Freundin angekommen bekomme ich dann prompt das Album in die Hand gedrückt. Plastic People ist eine sehr facetten- und abwechslungsreiche Mischung aus Elektronischen Beats mit Funk (Squeeze Me feat. Ben Westbeech), Soul (Bobby & Whitney feat. Caprice), Rap (That's My Word feat. Dudley Perkins) und Ambient (To Everyone Who Has). Am 27. Juni spielen Kraak & Smaak ein DJ Set im Bohannon Club in Berlin.

Karsten Köppern bereichert die elektronische Musikszene dieser Tage um zwei ausgezeichnete Stücke auf einer 7". Der Berliner, der seine Brötchen sonst als Sounddesigner bei Film und Fernsehen verdient, schafft mit dem ersten Stück Trauma, das auch schon eins von radio&fernseh's DJ Sets eröffnet, den perfekten Sound nicht nur für den Club sondern auch für folgende Auto- und Bahnfahrten durch die Stadt in den nächsten Laden, wo im Idealfall dann das zweite, mehr basslastige Stück Kuss Kuss läuft.
